Could´ve Been Worse

Friday, September 29th, 2006

For more than a year now, Republicans have mocked and undermined the campaign of Rep. Katherine Harris.  Many of them would have preferred having Rep. Mark Foley represent the GOP for the seat.  Harris´s campaign has had its problems, but just think about think about the implications of having a statewide candidate doing this.

After Labor Day: Where Things Stand

Monday, September 11th, 2006

Now that Labor Day has passed, the campaigns enter their final stretch.  Here’s a quick glance at where things stand going into the home stretch:
Republican Held Seats
Arizona - Despite dipping deep into his personal fortune, former Democrat State Party Chair Jim Pederson has been unable to cut into Sen. Jon Kyl’s solid lead.  Democrats were once […]

Eating Our Own

Monday, July 31st, 2006

The Florida Republican Party has officially refused to back the candidacy of Rep. Katherine Harris, the Associated Press reports today. Though not surprising given the treatment that she has received since she entered the race last summer, it remains appauling that a state Party, whose sole job is to elect candidates of their Party […]

Elizabeth Dole: A Year and a Half Older; Still Clueless

Friday, May 12th, 2006

This morning, Elizabeth Dole commented on several Senate races at a Christian Science Monitor breakfast.  In her comments, she showed that after a year and a half of heading up the NRSC, she still has no idea what she’s doing.  For starters, she called the record of Sen. Mike DeWine “mainstream”.  Sen. DeWine is running […]

Bense Bails; Lesson Learned?

Wednesday, May 10th, 2006

Florida House Speaker Allan Bense has finally announced that he will not challenge Republican frontrunner Rep. Katherine Harris.  With less than 48 hours until the filing deadline, this should finally end the drama that has been the buffoonery of the national Republican establishment.  For nearly a year, now, they have embarassed themselves in a desperate […]

Put Up or Shut Up

Monday, April 24th, 2006

Once again, Florida’s State Assembly Speaker is making noise about possibly entering the Florida Senate race.  This has gotten beyond silly.  For over a year, the GOP establishment has desperately attempted to recruit someone other than Rep. Katherine Harris for this race.  It is readily apparent that nobody else has been willing to take the […]

An Original Idea: Fight the Enemy

Wednesday, April 19th, 2006

Tom Jackson, writing for the Tampa Tribune, effectively offered that piece of advice to Republicans with regard to the Florida Senate race.  (Of course I’ve been offering that same advice since last November.)  The Florida Senate race has two components: an incumbent who is far too liberal for his state and a challenger who has […]

First Quarter Filings

Tuesday, April 18th, 2006

The Hill has an excellent roundup of Senate fundraising numbers for the first quarter.
Some observations:
Arizona - Jim Pederson has not invested the money that he would have needed to make this competitive.  He has already spent over $1 million and has fallen in the polls.  The Democrats might have had a chance to win this.  That is no longer […]

NOW Can We Close Ranks?

Wednesday, March 29th, 2006

Today, Tom Rooney, the last of the frequently discussed potential primary challengers to Rep. Katherine Harris, announced that he would not become a candidate.  This leaves Harris unopposed in her quest to unseat liberal Democrat Bill Nelson.  While there is still a little chatter about Rep. Mark Foley, a more moderate Republican, the fact is […]

Katherine Harris: Embarassment

Monday, March 27th, 2006

Those of you who have been readers of this blog for any length of time know that I have been one of Rep. Harris´s only defenders.  I think she has gotten a raw deal.  The treatment that she has received from the Party establishment is inexcusable.
Having said that, the way that she has handled her […]
