We have two elections between now and the next election for Hutchison’s seat, but Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison has announced her plans not to seek reelection. She also said that she may retire early to give someone else the change to establish seniority before the 2012 election.
Although it’s early to speculate, it is unlikely that the seat would be competitive. Karl Rove put the Texas Democrat Party back into the Dark Ages, and it is difficult to see them mounting a serious bid. There are a slew of potential replacements in the Republican Congressional delegation, but a dearth of Democrats who would seriously consider such a difficult race.
