Democrats might have had an outside shot at stealing a Southern Senate seat in Mississippi had Sen. Thad Cochran decided to retire. Sen. Cochran is now dashing those hopes. Cochran has begun raising funds for a bid for a sixth term, effectively locking former state Attorney General Mike Moore out of the race. DSCC Chair Chuck Schumer may yet manage to talk Moore into the race, but unless Sen. Cochran says macaca, it is extremely difficult to imagine him losing. The `08 playing field continues to get smaller as the early stages of the cycle progress, and it would be very surprising to see the number of competitive seats rise to double digits before the elections.
