Sen. Kit Bond said last week that he will not leave his seat to take the now-vacant position of President of the University of Missouri. The decision is perhaps most relevant on the issue of embryonic stem-cell research. As it stands now with those who have cast votes on the issue and with the public statements of newly elected Senators, an effort to override the Castle bill in the Senate would fail by a single vote. Bond has stayed firm in his opposition to the research, while Gov. Blunt, who was rumored to want to appoint himself to fill the vacancy, has fledged.
