Heavily recruited former Gov. John Kitzhaber has decided not to challenge Sen. Gordon Smith in 2008. Kitzhaber was heavily recruited and was the only top-tier candidate the Democrats had to offer. His decision leaves the opportunity to several B-listers, including a couple of the state’s members of Congress. It is somewhat unlikely, though, that any of them will give up their safe seats to run an uphill battle. Sen. Smith isn’t out of the woods yet, but he’ll surely sleep more soundly tonight with his top potential challenger out of the way.
