Wictory Wednesday: Flag Day Edition
Yesterday, Rhode Island’s conservative Senate candidate called on the liberal incumbent to do something that he has not done in the past: defend the American flag. Siding with the nearly 100,000 veterans in the state, Laffey made the case that those who have fought bravely to defend the nation should not be subject to having their sacrifices demeaned by those who never made them. As it stands, the Constitutional Amendment to defend the flag is just one vote shy of passage in the Senate. Should Ocean Staters replace Lincoln Chafee with Steve Laffey, the Amendment could well pass.
While important, this is just the latest in a long series of instances in which conservatives would be better off with the challenger than the incumbent. Lincoln Chafee opposed the reelection of President Bush. Mayor Laffey supported it. Lincoln Chafee voted against the confirmation of now-Justice Samuel Alito. Mayor Laffey supported it. Lincoln Chafee opposed President Bush’s tax cuts. Mayor Laffey supported them. Lincoln Chafee opposed the ban on partial-birth abortion. Mayor Laffey supported it. Lincoln Chafee opposes filibuster reform. Mayor Laffey supports it. Lincoln Chafee brags about his pork projects. Mayor Laffey wants to work with Senators McCain and Coburn to get rid of them.
In short, Republicans finally have a choice in Rhode Island. If you have a few bucks burning a hole in your pocket, there is no better way to spend them than on ridding the Senate of its most liberal Republican.
